"All new ideas are revolutionary and when the theory responsible for them is proved, through practical application, it requires only time for them to develop and to flourish. Such revolutionary ideas simply cannot be ignored. They cannot be kept in the
background"

| Kristi
Sesso, founder ENERGY BALANCING PILATES STUDIO, has been working out since she was a young child, knowing she wanted to be a professional dancer. After hours of class and rehearsals she focused on weight training to build her muscles and used a lot of exercise machines. She found herself spending more and more time at the gym, working harder and harder to create a sense of well-being and weight management, but all she gained for her efforts was stiff, bulky muscles and persistent aches and pains. |
| |
| After a badly twisted ankle, she hung up her pointe shoes to discover the expressive athleticism of modern dance, only to find out that she knew very little about how her body actually worked. Until she discovered The Pilates Method. Kristi first learned this mind-body method of conditioning from Joseph Pilates's successor, Romana
Kryzanowska**. |

"Within a matter of weeks I began to feel the internal strength that I had craved. My movements became more controlled and responsive. I was standing straighter and feeling more energized than ever before.... I found myself enjoying my activities more. Most important, I felt empowered by my newfound knowledge. I was interested. I was in control. I was hooked." |

| **A ballet dancer, Romana Kryzanowski was sent to Joseph Pilates's New York studio when she turned her ankle. At first, she balked at Pilates's whole-body approach, wondering why he didn't focus on her injury. But, after focus and intention, her ankle was healed and she felt better and more in control than she ever had before. She became Pilates's student, and she has been teaching the Pilates method for more than 50 years. |

WHAT
IS THE PILATES METHOD? |

An exercise routine embraced by professional dancers for over fifty years, Pilates is now the hottest and most talked about fitness trend since the running shoe. However, The Pilates Method of Physical and Mental Conditioning is not a trend, it's a tradition. |
| |
| Currently, the Pilates Method is used internationally by individuals at all levels of fitness as well as by dance companies, Broadway shows, students at performing arts schools, universities, sports teams, spa clients, body builders, fitness enthusiasts at private health clubs and more. |
| |
In one word, Pilates is a method. Pilates is exercise. In two words, Pilates is corrective exercise. |
| |
| The Method is an intelligent and organized system of working with the entire musculature - it works the whole body at once. The Method is a systematic progression of exercises to produce a balance of strength, flexibility, balance and control while correcting muscular imbalances that directly affect posture. |
| |
| You develop acute body awareness that allows for performance of life's daily activities with greater ease. |
| |
You
cannot have a better looking
and better feeling body than
the Pilates Body. |
| |
| Doctors, physical therapists, and other professional health care providers now recommend the Pilates Method as both an effective fitness method and a safe system of rehabilitation from injury as the exercises are designed to correct poor posture, minimize neck and shoulder dysfunction, decompress joints, stimulate circulation, and improve range of motion. |
| |
Traditional Yoga teaches relaxation and centering the spirit. Traditional Pilates Method teaches stability of bones and muscles, body consciousness and control. Gyrotonic teaches spiraling the spine and expanding the range of motion.. |

| Born in Germany in 1880, Joseph Hubertus Pilates had a lifelong interest in body conditioning. Dedicated to becoming stronger, he later grew to become an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast, and boxer. Constricted by chronic illness as a child, Joe sought to overcome |
| his disabilities with an amalgam of yoga, breath work, weight training and gymnastics. He believed that most of us overdevelop the stronger muscle groups, which ultimately leads to poor posture and spinal misalignment. His goal was to build and maintain a balanced, structurally sound body. |
| |
| While interned in England during World War I for his German citizenship, Joseph became a nurse. During this time, he designed exercise apparatus for immobilized patients by attaching springs to hospital beds. This system formed the foundation for his style of body conditioning and specialized exercise apparatus, which he brought to New York City when he opened the first Pilates Studio in 1926. |

Like other healers ahead of their time in the early 20th century, Joseph Pilates knew we were treading a downward path in health care and awareness. |
| |
| In 1934, Joseph Pilates manuscript
"Your Health", dedicated to The Next Generation of Physicians and The Association of Medico-Physical Research was published. This 150-page pamphlet was the first of its kind to bring into view our lack of practicing natural laws of life as applied to normal living that are required to ensure a long life and good health. What's more, Pilates said in 1934, "To provide care, our health care professionals will continue to focus on advanced remedies to cure symptoms than on one's own efforts, simple exercising and simple health rules that can be observed and must be observed." He was even bolder in his statements saying, "That the teachers of our children are, generally speaking, usually not enjoying ideal health and wholly unable to detect (and therefore unable to correct) the unnatural, harmful habits acquired by their pupils". "That the millions of dollars today foolishly expended and health foods, equipment, conferences, medicines etc are actually wasted for the reason that the claims made for them cannot be proven." "That century after century we persisted in sitting and sleeping in unscientifically constructed chairs and beds." |
